General Municipal Election - November 3, 2020

The City of Walnut will hold a General Municipal Election on Tuesday, November 3, 2020, to fill three (3) Walnut City Council seats for a four-year term. The nomination period for this election is Monday, July 13 through Friday, August 7 at noon. If an incumbent does not file nomination papers by the closing date, this period will be extended to Wednesday, August 12, 2020.

Requirements for Candidacy:

  • A citizen of the United States
  • At least 18 years of age
  • City of Walnut resident
  • Registered voter within the City of Walnut

Individuals interested in running for office should contact the Walnut City Clerk's Office by calling 909-348-0710 to schedule an appointment to take out nomination papers and receive a candidate handbook. The City Clerk's Office is open 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, closed on Fridays, with the exception of August 7, 2020. Appointments will be available starting Monday, July 13, 2020 and take approximately 30 minutes. There is a $25 processing fee for nomination papers and other election-related materials.

CANDIDATE INFORMATION

The Nomination Period for the November 3, 2020 election will be held between Monday, July 13, 2020 through Friday, August 7, 2020 at 1 p.m.  If an incumbent does not file nomination papers, the deadline will be extended to Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at 5 p.m. 

If you wish to run for Walnut City Council in the November 3, 2020 General Municipal Election, the candidate handbook will be available beginning Monday, July 13, 2020 in the City Clerk’s office.

The hours of operation are Monday – Thursday 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.  Offices are closed on Fridays, with the exception of August 7, 2020 open to candidates until 1 p.m.  If you are interested in obtaining a candidate handbook you must make an appointment with the City Clerk’s office at 909-348-0710.

NOMINATION PERIOD - Candidates may obtain filing papers from the City Clerk’s office Monday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.; Fridays are closed with the exception of Friday, August 7th at 1 p.m.

AUGUST 7 – 12

NOMINATION EXTENSION PERIOD - If an incumbent does not file papers by the deadline on Friday, August 7, 2020 at 1 p.m., the nomination period shall be extended for persons other than incumbent.

AUGUST 8 – 17

PUBLIC EXAMINATION PERIOD - Candidate Statements and ballot designations may be reviewed by the public during these dates.

RANDOMIZED ALPHABET DRAWING - The Secretary of State conducts a public drawing to determine the order of candidate names on ballot

SEPTEMBER 8 – OCTOBER 20

STATEMENT OF WRITE-IN CANDIDACY - During this time, a person may file this form in order to have their name written on a ballot and be counted

SEPTEMBER 24 – OCTOBER 13

MAILING OF OFFICIAL SAMPLE BALLOT BOOKLETS - An official sample ballot booklet will be mailed to each voter during this period

OCTOBER 5 – 27

MAILING OF VOTE BY MAIL BALLOTS – During this time the County will mail out ballots to registered voters.

If you are not a permanent voter, you may apply between these dates to receive a Vote by Mail ballot.

OCTOBER 19

CLOSE OF REGISTRATION – This is the last day to transfer or register to vote in this election.

VOTING & ELECTION INFORMATION

Requirements for Registering to Vote:

  • A United States Citizen and resident of California
  • At least 18 years of age or older on or before Election Day
  • Not currently in state or federal prison or on parole for the conviction of a felony, and
  • Not currently found mentally incompetent by a court law

Election Schedule

Pursuant to California Elections Code §1301 and City of Walnut Ordinance 17-05, the date of General Municipal Elections in the City of Walnut has been changed from the second Tuesday in April of even-numbered years to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of even-numbered years beginning in 2018. The next General Municipal Election for the City of Walnut is November 3, 2020.
