One of Walnut’s Mission Statements is to Maintain Quality of Life. This is accomplished by insuring that private properties are maintained consistent with adopted City Codes and standards. If substandard conditions are allowed to exist, they will detract from the appearance of our neighborhoods. If left unchecked, they can quickly lead to the creation of blighted conditions, reduced property values and a variety of other health and safety issues for our community.

Each resident and business owner has the ability and responsibility to prevent and correct unsightly conditions and maintain compliance with the City’s Codes. The Walnut Code Enforcement Division responds to complaints received about potential Code violations from a variety of sources, including other residents, on topics such as property maintenance standards, signs, uses of property, abandoned vehicles, and recreational vehicle parking. The Code Enforcement Division also assists the Building Division with substandard property and building regulations, and provides support to other City Departments and County Agencies such as Community Services, Public Works, Animal Control, and the Fire and Sheriff Departments in the interpretation and enforcement of the various municipal codes.

Upon receipt of a request for service and verification that a violation exists, a Notice of Violation is issued to the registered property owner for most common types of code violations. This includes but is not limited to various property maintenance issues; such as, overgrown weeds/vegetation; impediments to the public right-of-way; improper storage of trach receptacles; improper storage of inoperable vehicles; recreational vehicles, including boats, trailers, and ATVs; erecting non-permitted structures, signs and banners and many more listed in the public nuisance section of the Walnut Municipal Code. If after the second notice, the violation is not corrected, a third notice is issued along with a re-inspection fee of $150. An additional re-inspection fee of $150 is assessed for each subsequent notice until the violation is corrected.

For more information about the service of the Code Enforcement Division, stop by their offices, located at City Hall during regular business hours, or call (909) 595-7543 ext. 400.
